Machaklhela National Park

Machakhela National Park is located in Khelvachauri Municipality and is 30 km away from Batumi. The main goal of creating the park is to maintain the unique biodiversity and ecosystems of Colchic forests. Administration and Visitor Center are located in Khelvachauri Municipality, village Acharisaghmarti.


Territory of the park is represented with forests covering the slopes around the River Machakhela.  Unique species of relict forests are represented on the area: Colchic bot box, chestnut, nut, hazel-nut, bot, etc. There are three pedestrian trails integrated with the car route in the park area. Active tourist season lasts from May to October.  

It is the best destination if you seek to discover new adventures places.

Around Park Objects

Historical – Cultural Monument

Machakhela’s historical –ethnographic museum is located in village Zemo Chkhutuneti. The museum is 14 km far from the administrative building and 39 km far from Batumi. There are presented more than 800 exibits, that presents culture, religion and history. 

Machakhela Gun Monument is located 7 km far from Machakhela National Park Administration and 18 km far from Batumi. Local population of Machakhela Valley created the statue of gun, since the place was distinguished with the guns. 

Middle Ages Arch Bridges (Tamara Arch Bridges)
Tskhemlara Arch Bridge is located in Tskhemlara, 2 km far from Machakhela National Park’s Administration and 27 km far Batumi. Chomakhisuri Arch Bridge is located in village Kokoleti, 8 km far from the administration building (33 km far from Batumi). Chkheri Arch Bridge is located 15 km far from Machakhela Valley and 40 km far from Batumi. These bridges are constructed in feudal era. 

Gvara Fortress
Gvara Fortress is dated with 6th-7th centuries, it is located 300 meters far from river Chorokhi and Machakhela water inflow. It is 9 km from Machakhela National Park’s Administration to Gvara Fortress, and 20 km far from Batumi to the fortress. 

Chkhutuneti Fortress 
Chkhutuneti Fortress is dated by 9th-13th centuries and is located in Chokhatauri, 5 km far from the crossroad of village Chkhutuneti as well as village Chikuneti, and 30 km far from Batumi. It is possible to go to the fortress by hiking. 

10th-12th centuries Cellar
Ilia’s cellar is located 6 km far from the administration of Machakhela National Park and 31 km far from Batumi. 

Cellar of 15th Century
The cellar is located in village Chikuneti, 8 km far from the administration building of Machakhela National Park and 33 km far from Batumi. 

Siege – Gun
Siege – Gun was used during World War II. It is located 1 km far from Machakhela National Park’s administration and 26 km far from Batumi.
