Vashlovani National Park

  • Throw used tissues in the trash and Immediately clean your hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol, or If soap and water are readily available wash your hands.

Vashlovani National Park is distinguished from Georgia’s other protected areas by its semi-desert ecosystem. The views of the landscape with the snowy Caucasus Mountains in the background are unforgettable for visitors. It is the best destination for bird-watcher lovers, since the places is specific with its unique species. 

It is great place that can not be compared to anywhere else in Georgia. While visiting Vashlovani, you will feel that you are in another world. It is unique place with scientific and touristic significance.

Nature Monuments

Alazani Floodplain Forest Natural Monument

The Natural Monument is located in the bay of Alazani River, on 204.4 ha in the form of natural floodplain forest covered by lianas. The place is rich with perennial walnut, ash, oak and elm, as well as bushes characteristic to floodplain forests.  It takes one hour to cover 1 km of a pedestrian route in Kakliskure or Walnut Bay.

Location: Dedoplistskaro Municipality, right bank of Alazani River, to the southwest from Village Pirosmani, at an altitude of 165 m above sea level.

How to get here:  The nearest large populated area is Dedoplistskaro. The distance from Tbilisi to Dedoplistskaro is 130 km; the length of the trip is 2 hours. The distance from Dedoplistskaro to Alazani Floodplain Forest Natural Monument is 56 km; the length of the trip is 1 hour and 30 min.  

Where to stay: The best option for overnight stay is in town of Dedoplistskaro, where it is possible to stay at a hotel.

Artsivi (Eagle) Gorge Natural Monument

Artsivi (Eagle) Gorge Natural Monument represents an unique complex consisting of two sites. The first one is a limestone rock canyon, while the other is a adjacent forested area, where Khornabuji fortress was built (V c).

The canyon with a picturesque landscape is a home to several birds of prey (eagle, vulture etc.). Looking at the hanging cliffs from the rocky slopes of the gorge, it is possible to observe nests of eagles and other rare/extinct plants, which cannot be seen anywhere else in Georgia.

The length is of the pedestrian route is 1 km, which can be covered in 1 hour.

The length of the pedestrian route to Khornabuji fortress is 0.5 km and it can be covered in 30 minutes.

How to get there: The nearest large settlement to the natural monument is Dedoplistskaro, which is 130 km away from Tbilisi. The road is paved. The natural monument itself is in 4 km to the north of Dedoplistskaro. 2 km of the road is paved and the other 2 km is a gravel road laid in the forest. 
Tbilisi - Dedoplistskaro - 2 hrs by car;
Dedoplistskaro – Eagle gorge - 15 min by car.

Takhti-Tepha Natural Monument

Takhti-Tepha is an inorganic natural monument that occupies 1 hectare and consists of bubbling mud craters erupting from the ground. It is located to the south of Dali water reservoir, paralel to Takhti-Tepha mountain range. The craters, along with small open vents are constantly active, erupting mud, oil and gas. The length of the pedestrian path to Takhti-Tepha is 0.5 km or 30 minutes. The total area of the natural monument is 9.7 ha. 

How to get here: The largest settlment near the natural monument is the town of Dedoplistskaro, which is located 130 km away from Tbilisi. The road is paved. The road from Dedoplistskaro to the natural monument is 37 km. The road to the Dali water reservoir (Iori River) is a gravel road and after passing over the reservoir, 15 km of the road is a dirt road.  
Tbilisi - Dedoplistskaro - 2 hours;
Dedoplistskaro - Takhti-Tepha - 1 hour.

Khornabuji Fortress

5th century Khornabuji Fortress (founded by King Vakhtang Gorgasali). It is located 4 km north from Dedoplistkaro Municipality Centre on steep limestone rocks. Travel from municipality centre to the city-fortress takes 15 minutes by car. It is possible to hike up the fortress on foot. 

St. Elias Church

V-VI century St. Elias Church on Mount Elias. It is located 3 km to the south from Dedoplistskaro Municipality centre, on limestone rock of Mount Elias.Travel from municipality centre to Mount Elias takes 10 minutes. It is possible to walk up to the church, which is built in the middle of the rock at a height of 60 m. 

The domed Church of the Ascention

The domed Church of Seraphoim of Sarov (XVIII) in village Samreklo. The church is located 3 km to the east of the municipality centre. Travel to the church by car takes 10 minutes. 

The Complex of Bodbe Convent

The unique Complex of Bodbe Convent (V) - where the relics of St. Nino lie at St. George Church (is fully decorated with frescoes). The convent is located 30 km to the north-west of Dedoplistskaro Municipality centre, on the eastern edge of Gombori ridge. Travel from municipality centre to the convent takes 40 minutes. 

Niko Pirosmanashvili State Museum

Niko Pirosmanashvili State Museum - in village Mirzaani (museum is a home to original works by Niko Pirosmani). The museum is 25 km to the north-west from Dedoplistskaro Municipality centre. Travel by car takes 30 minutes.
